And People Thought I was Crazy…

…for posting up pictures of toilets on my blog. My work does not even compare to the extent that Japanese people have gone to in order to teach their young ones how to potty!

See this!

That just tickles my tummy when I see that. Yay!

Milking the Public Goods Again: Public Air Conditioning

Filed under: Public Policy — admin at 1:39 pm on Tuesday, July 25, 2006

While the rest of California faces rolling blackouts and downed power equipment, I’ve found another way to milk to milk the public goods for my own benefit. This time it’s public air conditioning. I rent a room out of an old house, and it gets really fucking hot in there. I mean, REALLY fucking hot. I woke up today at 7 am, and it was already 78 deg F…in MY ROOM. At night when I go to sleep it’s about 80-82 deg F. That’s shitty too. I have no fan, mostly because I’m cheap but also because I’m about to move out of this house so there’s no point.

So, what’s the answer? Go to the Library. Hell yeah. Cupertino’s Library is the nicest public municipal library I’ve ever seen in my life. OK, so I haven’t seen LA County Library and all the rest, but this is damn near perfect. You would think that The Silicon Valley residents of Cupertino, CA have money flowing out of their ass or something, to fund such beautiful public libraries with ICE COLD air conditioning. But alas, it seems that everyone and their mom had the same idea as me, and I just about got the last spot in the parking lot, and there was just one last desk for me to sit at here. Damn. These Chinese people are really shrewd. Not only do they like the Library, but they know how to milk the public goods. But we’ll leave that to another post.

For now, I contemplate the exploitation of the public goods for my personal benefit, as I attempt to cool the fuck down. Excuse my language. The heat is extremely volatile and my temperament has been tested for too long these past couple of days. I mean, I tried to handle it, but several days of near-triple-digit heat (inside the house) have really gotten to me. OMG, I’m so glad I don’t rely on outdoor work for a living. God bless you if you’re a gardener or a construction worker this summer. You have balls.

Anyway, back to practicing the GRE, while yalls deal with the threat of rolling blackouts…just to let you know, the City of Cupertino, CA is adding to your woes. = )

Life is not Deliberate

Filed under: Navigating Life, Work — admin at 11:07 am on Thursday, July 20, 2006

I had another interview today, this one with the Managing Director of the Fritz Institute for a possible job opportunity in technology research in humanitarian aid. She asked me the question that I usually have trouble answering: “What do you want to do (when you grow up)?”

…or at least I don’t know how to answer it in her terms, or in the terms of people who would ask that kind of question. If you don’t understand what I’m talking about, you’re probably one of these people too. You’ve probably asked somewhere along the line after reading my blog, “What the hell does this guy do? What are his goals?”

But after surviving enough of these harrowing situations it’s clear that certain guiding principles drive my life rather than concrete goals set to define (and dominate) my personal success. So I told her: I do what’s interesting to me at that moment. Sometimes this is technology, sometimes it’s social policy or international development. The bullet points on my resume just happen to play out as combinations of these interests.

But hopefully it would be obvious to any hiring manager that intellectual motivation and moral passion are my guides for personal success. Combined with the curiosity to find odd, unexpected, and challenging situations in life ….this is the aroma that wakes me up in the morning.

Simply put, I don’t want tomorrow to seem like any yesterday…but I do want today to be the freshest cup of tea that I’ve ever tasted. Ask yourself, do you ever wake up in the morning and say to yourself, “Damn, I know why I’m alive…??” I hope you do at least a little bit after reading some of this. Or maybe you feel the way I do, and you’re happy just to realize that with your gut as your compass and with your mind as your guide…your legs can take you on the journey that you never thought could be possible today.

My life is not deliberate, but the way i Live, is.

Geometric Progression for $5 (lost)

Filed under: Travel — admin at 1:38 pm on Tuesday, July 18, 2006

So it’s pretty clear that A) you as the readers of my blog are too lazy to look up the answer to this Question Contest or B) $5 is just too cheap for you to waste your time and imagination on this. I prefer to not conclude that you are C) incapable of doing math, since it’s pretty clear to me that the answer to this Question would only require a few minutes of Googling, and then cutting and pasting. But hey, whatevers. It’s your life.

The lack of answers to the Question Contest also tells me what kind of readers are out there. You’d rather passively ingest my words of wisdom rather than offer your own as solutions to my life’s problems. Thanks for caring.

Just kidding. Maybe next time I should raise the Question Contest award to $20 instead?

Geometric Progression for $5

Filed under: Travel — admin at 8:56 pm on Thursday, July 13, 2006

OK, I have a question.

This should be easy – if you have a Calculus book. In fact, it’s so easy I missed this question on my math test today. I’m so resentful. Now, I wanna see how many of you muthafuckas know the answer to this one:

What are the conditions for a geometric series to be convergent?

[hint: there are two conditions, and you must identify both]

First person to give me a correct answer in the comments below will get $5 by PayPal. As always, I decide who gets the money, and this contest is only valid in jurisdictions where it’s legal. You have until Sunday, 11:59 pm – July 16.
