Milking the Public Goods: Taking Advantage of Bay Area Freeways on “Spare the Air” Days
Whoever thought of the plan to give free public transit to everyone in the Bay Area on “Spare the Air” alert days – I thank you. You are a genious. On those first two hot days of summer so far, I’ve already saved a good hour-or-so from sitting in traffic. It’s because of you that the Bay Area’s freeways have become unclogged, and driving has again become a pleasure…all because of your free transit idea.
Again, thank you.
I’m sure the public cost of serving the thousands of Bay Area commuters on the first couple of Spare the Air days this summer was well worth it. For me it was ABSOLUTELY worth it. Let me explain.
Spare the Air is a state of alert for the Bay Area. This happens when public health agencies and all that declare air quality has hit the shitter, and it’s time for people to stop driving, for businesses to stop running their AC, for buses to stop idling their engines for no apparent reason while they wait for passengers to pick up. Public transit agencies around the Bay Area also decided to lift the burden on commuteres by paying for their transit fees on the first 3 Spare the Air days of the summer. I think you can even carpool over the Bay Area bridges for free all day too.
Whatever it is, it’s a damn good idea. However, I still belong to the group of irresponsible and insensitve citizens who has refused to reduce my pollution producing habits on these days. Screw it, when the roads clear and people start taking public transportation….the REAL public goods are MINE. Me and my Jeep Grand Cherokee take over the streets when you’re all sitting in your AC Transit buses sweating to hell, like it’s global warming from 2046 in Arabian desert. Go ahead, wait for your bus. And thanks for getting out of my way.
[On that note, I still do appreciate public transit and try to take it whenever I can. One day it will actually make sense to take it when I really need it....at least for the Silicon Valley area, that is...]
